Are You Quitting Too Easily?
Are you quitting too easily?
I’ve found a sequence that appears in my life. It’s led to quitting things too early. Here’s the sequence:
I’m excited to start
I start strong
I manage the steps
I face a challenge
My mind shifts from the excitement of starting to the pain of the challenge
The challenge gets in my head
I make up excuses about why I can’t keep going
I stop
I’m angry at myself
I think this sequence occurs for many men. The moment we begin something new reasons immediately present themselves that push us to quit (fear of failure, fear of success, laziness, failing to believe in ourselves). The idea to quit stays in our heads if reasons to quit exist.
Think about the times you’ve been tempted to quit.
Why did you quit?
Did you become emotionally emasculated?
Did you quit forgiving yourself?
Did you quit trying to win a battle over temptation?
Did you quit working on your marriage?
Did you quit trying to father your children?
Men quit too easily.
We don't end up quitting because we’re facing too many challenges. We quit because we're too weak.
How can you change your habit of quitting when things get too hard?
Take the idea of quitting off the table. Keep coming back for more.
Be stubborn when it comes to finishing what you started; finishing what matters most. Refuse to back down in the face of challenge. Face your demons. Keep your promises to yourself and to others.
In her last will and testament, Andrew Jackson’s mother, Elizabeth, challenged her son with this unique word, “Sustain your manhood always.”
