When I was a 20-year-old college student, the president of my college spoke to me some of the most life-changing words I’d ever heard.
I’d not personally met the man before. He was a giant of a man. A bit intimidating. You knew you were around power, influence, wisdom, and grace when you were in his presence.
One Sunday evening after chapel, I saw Dr. McKenzie greeting students. I mustered up all my bravery and approached to meet him. We made eye contact, and I extended my hand to shake his while introducing myself. The words he spoke when our hands met set me off guard. “Yes, I know you,” he said, “your reputation precedes you.” I imagine I was grinning from ear to ear. I felt myself stand up straighter.
That moment changed me so much.
I think we all realize how important our reputation is. Buffet’s assessment is correct. I’d love to read your comments about reputation building or rebuilding. What have you learned from Buffett’s quote?
If you’re struggling with your reputation, I suggest you apply some of these actions.
Be an open person. Meet new people or rekindle old relationships.
Keep your promises, obviously.
Give more than what’s expected of you.
Pay attention to your character.
Take responsibility for your actions.
Help people.
What would add to the ways you can increase your positive reputation?
If this is a weak area of your life and you want to take action to rebuild your reputation, send me a private message. I'd love to have a conversation.
